In this series of direct castings of cracked mirrors, artist Diana Shpungin collected numerous broken wall mirrors over the course of a year and cast them in solid paper. Created at Dieu Donné Paper, these works were cast in reverse by pulling large sheets of pigmented cotton paper pulp in varieties of gray tones and a luminous silver pigment. Not one to mess with the feasibility of a superstition, Shpungin literally and figuratively made a negative a positive, absorbing the bad luck by filling the fissure that caused it. The mirrors no longer allow for a reflection. The glass has materially transformed into a glimmering stone like surface and now simply functions as an omen for good luck.
